Trade
2007 – ongoing

In a culture of mass consumption and chain stores individual craftsmanship and personal attention is rare. The goods we buy, as well as the sales clerks, are impermanent and interchangeable. This project sprang from a curiosity for the worlds contained in specialist, small-scale businesses in London. Here personal histories appear to have a tangible connection with the physical spaces inhabited. Shoproom, goods and shopkeeper, workshop, tools and artisan merge their characteristics in time. Wandering through London I remain surprised and enchanted by small enterprises, seemingly uncompromised by conformance to the pressures of a consumer culture.
